Zhengzhou University

Run by the People’s Government of Henan Province, Zhengzhou University (ZZU) ，located at No.100, Kexuedadao Road, Zhengzhou City, Henan，boasts of a total area of about 939 acres and four campuses: Main Campus (No.100, Kexuedadao Road, Zhengzhou City), South Campus (No.75, Daxuebeilu Road, Zhengzhou City), North Campus (No. 97, Wenhua Road, Zhengzhou City), and East Campus (No. 40, Daxuebeilu Road, Zhengzhou City). Targeting the whole China for admission, ZZU embraces a wide range of enrollment of over 50, 000 full-time undergraduates, over 22, 000 full-time master and doctor students and some 2, 500 international students from more than 116 countries and regions. ZZU is on the list of National “211 Project” of key construction universities, and of “One Province, One University” of National Key Support Construction Universities, as well as of co-construction universities by Henan Province and Ministry of Education. In September of 2017, ZZU entered the construction sequence of National World First-class Universities. Standing at this new historic starting line, ZZU decided its location of running school to be comprehensive & research-oriented, and laid down a three-step development strategy, striving to build a world first-class comprehensive research-oriented university by the middle of this century.

Medical education of ZZU could date back to the establishment of National No.5 Sun Yat-sen University in 1928, whose medicine discipline became an independent institution, and was renamed “Henan Medical College” in 1952, hence breaking a new ground for Henan modern medical education. The former ZZU, the first comprehensive university established by new China in 1956, was approved to enter National “211 Project” list in 1996. Zhengzhou University of Technology (ZUT), a national key university founded in 1963, was under the direct leadership of the former Ministry of Chemical Industry. A new ZZU was born in July 2000 when the former ZZU, ZUT and Henan Medical University (HMU) merged into one. A large number of distinguished scholars and experts have come to teach or work at this university, such as Prof. Ji Wenfu, an educator, historian and philosopher, Prof. Huo Bingquan, a physicist, Prof. Hou Debang, a chemist, Academician Zhong Xiangchong from Chinese Academy of Sciences, an expert in refractory, Prof. Sun Guoliang, an expert in civil engineering, Prof. Dong Minsheng, an expert in otolaryngology, Prof. Shen Qiong, the founder of the esophageal cytology, and Prof. Su Shouzhi, an expert in the human parasitology.

The long history of ZZU has cultivated its own distinctive culture. Rooted in the broad and profound culture of the Central Plains of China, ZZU people have inherited and developed the virtues of tolerance, lenience and can-do and can-go spirit; Multicultural have thrived on blending and symbiosis here. ZZU students come from 31 provinces and autonomous regions in China, as well as over 116 countries and regions in the world, hence generating a cultural atmosphere integrated of multi-regional, multi-ethical and multi-cultural elements; a balanced development of the 12 disciplines of liberal arts, science and engineering has engendered a favorable atmosphere of cultivation, characterized by inter-disciplinarization and inter-complementation; As inheritor and practitioner of time-honored distinctive cultures, blessed with accumulation and sublimation of a distinctive culture over a long history, the three campuses of ZZU have fostered ZZU’s mission and spirit of seeking truth and being accountable, thus forming her typical school ethos-- Perseverance, Trust-worthiness, Benevolence, Tolerance, Modesty, Prudence, and Critical Thinking and Diligence. While strengthening the construction of its own culture, ZZU also stresses its societal role of guiding culture, striving to make new contributions for the inheritance and innovation of Chinese civilization.

There are 12 disciplines in Zhengzhou University, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art, with a balanced development of all disciplines; There are three world-class disciplines: chemistry, materials science and engineering, and clinical medicine; There are six national key (cultivated) disciplines: condensed matter physics, material processing engineering, ancient Chinese history, organic chemistry, chemical technology, pathology and pathophysiology; There are 17 ESI disciplines in the top 1% of the world, including clinical medicine, chemistry, materials science, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavioral science, immunology, environment and ecology, physics, social science overview, computer science, agricultural science, microbiology, plant and zoology, mathematics, etc. There are three top 1 ‰ disciplines in ESI globally, with Chemistry ESI ranking 0.435 ‰ globally, Materials Science ranking 0.556 ‰ globally, and Clinical Medicine ranking 0.830 ‰ globally. As academic institutions, it ranks 336th globally and 27th among domestic universities. There are 30 doctoral programs of first-level disciplines, 3 doctoral programs of independent second-level disciplines, 59 master programs of first-level disciplines, 1 granting unit of doctorate professional degree, 32 granting units of professional master degree, and 31 post-doctoral exchange centers as well. There are more than 4500 full-time teachers (including full-time scientific research), including 24 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 13 winners of the "National Outstanding Youth Science Fund", 12 winners of the "Yangtze River Scholars Award Program", 25 other national leading talents, 46 national level young talents such as outstanding youth and young adults, 27 candidates for the national "Hundred and Ten Million Talents Project". Along with 808 professors and 2656 associate professors, a strong team of talents is set up, with academicians and academic masters as the head, distinguished young scholars and Yangtze River scholars as academic leaders and young PhDs as backbones. Cui Junzhi, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, serves as the President of Henan Big Data Research Institute, Gao Jun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, serves as the President of the School of Earth Science and Technology, He Jilin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, serves as the Director of the Central Plains Key Metal Laboratory, the President of Henan Institute of Resources and Materials Industry Technology, Wang Fuming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, serves as the Director of the Yellow River Laboratory, and Chen Fen'er, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, serves as the President of, Nick Lemon, a member of the British Academy of Medical Sciences and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, served as the International Dean of the School of Medical Sciences at Zhengzhou University. Liu Qingzhu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, served as the Dean of the School of History and the Central Plains Institute of History and Culture (Archaeology and Cultural Heritage). Jin Bei, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, served as the Dean of the School of Business. Mr. Nan Zhenzhong, Mr. Zhang Hai, and others taught our school.

By fostering integrity and promoting rounded development of people, ZZU has formed her own complete system of talent cultivation. Nowadays as many as 108 undergraduate specialties have been offered by 51 schools or departments on the main campus. There are 4 national teaching teams, 6 national teachers, 6 national majors of comprehensive reform pilot, 14 specialties with national characteristics, 11 majors that have passed international engineering education certification, 5 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 1 National Virtual Simulation Lab Center, 7 National Centers for Engineering Practice Teaching, 14 National Excellent Courses, 4 National Excellent Open Video Courses, 14 National Excellent Courses of sharing resources, 2 National Bilingual Teaching Model Courses, 2 National Experimental Zones for Innovative Model of Talent Cultivation, 1 National Base for Basic Science Research and Teaching Talent Training, and 1 National Base of Cultural Quality Education for College Students and 2 National Bases for College Student Off-campus Practice Training. In addition, ZZU has so far won 9 National Teaching Achievement Awards and successively been listed as a National university of education and training for Outstanding Engineers, Legal Talents and Doctors.  As a result of fruitful talents cultivation, nearly 1,000, 000 alumni have become hardcore and backbone of all walks of life and builders of Chinese People’s Great Rejuvenation, thus producing a unique “ZZU Brand”.

Technological innovation boosts innovation-driven development. Centering her efforts on national major strategies, ZZU has stipulated a scheme of implementation that integrates ZZU into Zhengzhou-Luoyang-Xinxiang National Self-dependent Innovation Demonstration Area, thus forming a system of innovation driven development. Now ZZU boasts of National Engineering Researching Center for Advanced Polymer Processing Technology, National Engineering Laboratory for Internet Medical Care, National Research and Promotion Center for Calcium Magnesium Phosphate Compound Fertilizer Technology, National and local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Major Infrastructure Detection and Repairing technology, National Research Center for Drug Safety Evaluation, Collaborative Innovation for National Territorial Sovereignty and Maritime Rights and Interests (Collaborative Unit); 2 National Bases for Medicine Clinical Research, 1 National Training Base for Intellectual Property, 6 key laboratories, engineering research centers and key research bases for the humanities and social sciences sponsored by the Ministry of Education, 7 provincial collaborative innovation centers of materials, resources and other subjects. Besides, several school-level research institutes directly under School authority have also been established, such as the ZZU Academy of Medical Sciences, ZZU Institute of Pharmacology, Henan Provincial Industrial Technology Research Institute of Materials and Resources, Industrial Technology Research Institute of ZZU, Modern Analysis and Calculation Center of ZZU and so on.

In recent five years, ZZU has undertaken 78 projects, like the National Key Special Projects, National Program 973, Project 863, Project supported by the National Key Technology Research and Development Program etc. Meanwhile, ZZU has acquired over 1184 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. ZZU has made major breakthroughs in various fields, such as “Shenzhou” spaceship’s viewing window protection equipment for astronauts walking in space, Study of basic theories of magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion, key technology and its development application research for production of fuel ethanol for cars, trenchless engineering technology and equipment, “one-step” solid-phase composition of semi-aromatic high-performance preparative technology, selective hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene catalyst and catalytic process, hardly degradable industrial wastewater treatment and key technology and equipment for toxic reduction, steel fiber reinforced concrete structure computing theory and development and application of key technology, plant brassinolide research, the historical studies of Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties, and Sui and Tang Dynasties. What’s more, our university has won 7 National Awards for Science and Technology Advancement (including 1 science popularization award), 1 National Technological Invention Award, and 2 National Natural Science Awards.

ZZU has widely conducted international exchanges and Industry-education-research cooperation. She has established intercollegiate cooperative relationship with 205 universities from over 41 countries and regions, including USA, UK, etc., and 8 Chinese-foreign cooperation programs of education with overseas renowned universities like Monash University and University of Wisconsin, University of Warsaw University, and the Belarusian State Academy of Music, etc, of Confucius Institute in India, and Confucius Classroom in USA. As the first batch of local universities enlisted in “Internationalization Model Institute Promotion Project Pilot Unit”, ZZU is also the founding member of “Sino-Russia Language and Culture University Alliance”, a sponsor member of “Sino-Russia Journalism Education University Alliance”, and a member of “Sino-Russia Medicine University Alliance”. ZZU is home to four state-level international joint research centers: micro-nano molding technology, cell and gene therapy, intelligent design for low-carbon environmentally friendly materials and Cancel Chemoprevention. In 2016, ZZU ranked No.31 on the list of internationalization level for Chinese Universities and Colleges. ZZU led the procedures to build Henan Provincial National University Science Park, and ZZU’s University Science Park came to be identified as such a park. Devoted to shaping ZZU project and technology service brand, ZZU has built ZZU Comprehensive Design Institute into a leading enterprise in Henan civil construction trade. ZZU is promoting the development of conglomerating affiliated hospitals, 10 of which possess 36 national clinical key specialties, 149 provincial medical key (cultivated) disciplines, and more than 30, 000 beds, over 17.8 million yearly diagnoses, thus becoming the “group army” of Henan Medical Industry.

Constructing ZZU into a world first-rate university echoes the call of economic modernization development of the central plains, loads itself with the expectations of hundreds of millions of Henan people to enjoy high-quality higher education, and bears the trust that a local big university would develop into a strong one, and shoulders the will of rising Central Plains and national rejuvenation.
